BEDROOMS today are least ventilated, windows are rarely opened and the trend has been to have the room air conditioned or with heaters.
Over and above these bad practices, bedrooms have the most fabric with curtains of the heaviest materials, bedsheets that are thick and heavy, blankets and comforters, carpeted flooring and all or our clothes on racks and hangers.
As if the above is not enough, fragrances are sprayed to make the bedroom smell nice or aromatherapy candles are burnt for its fragrance. Sometimes insecticides are also sprayed to keep away mosquitoes or night insects.
Bedrooms have become a potpourri of all sorts of allergens on the floor, on the mattress and even in the bedroom air as well. Gases off the shellac and varnishing of furniture also add to the "ruined" stale bedroom air.
Baby allergies may be triggered by any of the above mentioned factors, besides milk and food or even new clothing and choice of materials. It is important to identify them early enough to avoid damage and complications to the child. Allergic symptoms may be confusing to most mothers since they are closely related to the common flu and cold.
When a foreign "body" or allergen is detected, the body reacts and the immune system fights these foreign elements. This is what is allergy reactions. These reactions show in the form of skin rashes, vomiting, swellings, runny nose, itchiness and scratchings, diarrhea, or even irregular crying as in pain or irritability.
Upon recognition of irregularities, consult and do not choose to wait or attempt medications, treatments of your choice. Babies spend more time at sleep than in play. Toddlers love to play but do go to sleep several times in a day. From birth till aged one or even two, for the amount of time spent in the bedroom, what are they breathing?
How clean is the air? Has the air been filtered of its dust, pollens and other allergens afloat but not visible to the eye. As they begin to creep, crawl and learn to play with toys or walk, carpet my be comfortable, but is it healthy?
