WHY DO YOU SLEEP WITH AN ENEMY?

WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO SLEEP TONIGHT IF YOU KNEW THAT YOU HAD AN ENEMY IN BED?

If you or anyone in your family identifies with any of the following allergy related maladies such as Asthma, Eczema, Bronchitis, Inflammation of the Mucous Membranes, Itchy Red Eyes, Headaches, Sinus Pain, Fatigue, early morning excessive sneezing or even feelings of depression when you wake up, you may very well be sleeping with the enemy.

Who is this enemy? It's none other than the common household invisible creature called a dust mite. Forget its scientific name, for that is a mouthful to pronounce and more than a handful to be remembered.

Dust mites live in almost all of the household articles, especially those that are fabric based like sofas, furniture and carpets. Millions may inhabit one home, but they are safe and sound for they are not visible to the naked to the human eye. Since you feed them well, without your knowing, their colonies breed and multiply fast. The dust mites feed on our shed dead skin cells and we do shed a lot daily. The faeces and dead bodies of mites are the allergens to susceptible people, causing asthma, rhinitis or dermatitis.

Just imagine how small they are. You could place a thousand on the head of a pin, or have up to 7,00 sitting on a finger nail. They are real trouble makers. They multiply fast, are blind, eight legged and belong to the spiders family group. They are harmless and hardly bite. Their favorite breeding ground is that very mattress, you slept on last night. Their ideal home is every slept in mattress, universally. You are right that your body warmth cares and your dead skin cells is their feed.

Mattresses are slept in daily. Abundance of dead skin sells is available as food. They can penetrate the mattress and covers via the textile pores. The mattress double up as hide-out by day and hunting ground by night, and out of reach of most vacuums. Here are some researched facts for you to ponder:

• We shed 10,000 million scales of bacteria laden skin each day, most end up in our mattresses.
• Dust mites produce 200 times it’s body weight in excrement during their normal life span..
• Dust mites feast for up to 170 days on our shed skin.
• Dust mites spread rapidly. A female dust mite lays 300 eggs.
• They can live without food for up to a year.

  1. I always keep my bed clean and insect free before going to bed. What I do is during weekends I usually put my bed outside the house at the backyard and have it under the sun for a couple of hours. I also clean all pillow sheets and pillows very well and I don't let my room and my entire house be full of dirt. I always maintain a clean environment inside and outside.

    1. Hi Dave,It is actually excellent to dry mattress and pillows in the sun. Rids sweat and moisture plus "kills" uninvited mites and makes bedding healthy. The only problem is that today's mattresses are thick, heavy and difficult to carry out. The other difficulty is "high rise " living with no space.
Mattress and bedroom cleaning is a "deadly' must.

  3. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. The best way to be hygienic about pillows and mattresses is to sun them and keep turning them over. To a dd spice, a cane helps by whacking them in the sun.
The modern scenario does not allow for the above practice.Mattresses are heavier to be carried out and so nothing gets cleaned. The other reason is congestion of community in housing schemes, and not having each family a compound.
MATTRESS Cleaning is a must and helps remove (minimise) dust content; dust mites; mites droppings; our dead skin cells ...... all of which are causes for an assortment of allergies.
Thank you Dave Velasco for visiting my blogs and your positive comments.

  4. INDOOR POLLUTION is not only in commercial buildings but also at its worst in bedrooms and homes. Allergic reactions are soaring, and the need to keep indoors as clean as possible needs no explanation.
INDOOR CLEANING must be taken seriously and cannot be left attended as we all spend from 70% to 90% of our day and life indoors within home. office own cars or public transport.
In my blogs, emphasis is on air quality, without which I would not be able to write this reply.
Thank you for visiting my blogs.
