How To Clean and Maintain Mattress
When asked to name the dirtiest item at home, you can almost always be certain every other commonly thought or least thought of item is likely to be mentioned. Not many stop to think about or reflect upon the mattress. Who would think that where we lay to rest and recuperate at the end of each day is likely to be the dirtiest place and item at home.
YES! The mattress is definitely the dirtiest of all items within the house. It is a neglected item and one that is taken for granted. The mattress we return to daily IS THE DIRTIEST piece of household item. Bed sheets may be washed and changed but the mattress rarely gets cleaned. They are heavy, they cannot be taken out of home for drying in the sun, and being fabric, cannot be washed at all.
As a result, dust mites and bed bugs make mattresses a wonderful home and hideout for themselves. They breed in mattresses and create colonies of millions of dust mites and hundreds of bed bugs per mattress.
These minuscule creatures inside your bed can actually cause an assortment of health and skin problems. Bed bugs, for instance, usually feed on our dead skin cells. Their bites can cause rashes and skin infection. Dust mites also have similar effects.
Dust and dust mites get to be easily inhaled, when air borne. Mites droppings are plenty in mattresses. When inhaled, they do trigger an abnormal production of histamine in our system. This leads to unwanted physical problems such as wheezing, coughing, trouble breathing, sneezing and watery eyes.
Needless to say, you have to maintain the cleanliness of your mattress all the time. Try the following bedroom cleaning tips:
Tip 1: Always use a vacuum cleaner when cleaning the area below the bed and the mattress. Using other cleaners without a suction formula might only transfer dust particles into the air. You are merely scattering dust everywhere in your room. Choose a vacuum cleaner that has HEPA or high efficiency particular air filter in order to remove dust in the air.
Tip 2: Vacuum all sides of your mattress at least twice or thrice a month. Run the vacuum cleaner using one direction only for more effective cleaning. Make sure you cover all areas, especially the sides and the edges of the bed.
Tip 3: To avoid collection of dust, try using mattress covers or try placing mattress toppers. Many people tend to shy away from mattress covers because they usually have the plastic interior that is quite uncomfortable. But today, you can find covers with more comfortable materials.
Tip 4: Change your bed sheets and pillow cases once a week. Dust particles and bed bugs are not the only ones you are in danger of. Your skin also sheds off dead skin cells and sebum. They can encourage bacteria and germs to breed in your sheets and pillow cases.
Wash all bed sheets, blankets, comforters, pillow cases and other bed fabrics lukewarm water and use mild detergent. Hang them up to dry completely.
Tip 5: Avoid lounging on your bed while eating. Also avoid hopping into bed if you just went outdoors. Your clothes can contain sweat, bacteria and germs that will surely get transferred to the mattress. Change into clean clothes first if you want to maintain a clean mattress.
Tip 6: Close windows during windy days. The wind can carry dust into your room and they can easily travel to the surface of your bed.
