We live life surrounded by pollutes and pollution of all kinds. BEDROOM POLLUTION is one kind that we subject ourselves and families to for 6 to 10 hours daily, every night and that is becoming a long term health hazard. The continuing increase in "induced asthmatics", sinus cases; allergens related respiratory disorders and almost equal numbers in reported skin allergy patients are all testimony.
Modern bedrooms lack adequate air ventilation. Windows do not get opened to facilitate air exchange and new designs do not allow for air ventilating outlets. Again, accumulation of books, magazines, laundry; clothes and all kinds of decorative items crowd the standard bedroom and become invitees for dust accumulation. Fabric content is also plenty.
If there is one sure way to start, and other ways to reduce pollution and dust content in the bedroom, just follow.
- CLEAR THE BEDROOM OF ALL IRRELEVANT ITEMS. Books, magazines, tables and shelves are all best kept outside the bedroom.
- MINIMIZE FABRIC. Leave used clothes near the laundry, do not leave clothes hanging behind doors or all the room. Curtains need washing and changing regularly. So do blankets, bedsheets and comforters. Fabric attract and retain dust.
- ELIMINATE or minimize air borne dust with hepa based air cleaners. Air purifies with filters need to be attended, filters washed or changed regularly for they choke with dust, very fast. Water based are the best form, as wet dust cannot fly and water is cheaper and can be changed daily.
- Water based vacuum cleaners are excellent removers of dust and dirt from the floor, under the bed, tops of doors and cupboard, corners, walls, window frames and almost anywhere and everywhere in the bedroom.
- Clean your room thrice or more weekly. Bedrooms are where we spend the most time daily at home. Do not use rags or any dusters, as they only spread and distribute dust all over.
- Try and keep humidity level low at less than 50%. Dust mites find it difficult to thrive in drier air.
- Avoid having rugs and carpets in the bedroom. They make excellent "bins" for dust and dirt.
- Just in case, your home or place of stay in centralized air conditioning system, thee deed to check the ducts should not be overlooked. If your room is air conditioned, check and change the filters. You do not want to spend the night breathing bacteria, allergens and mold.
- Mattresses need to be beaten, and all of our dead skin cells, dust mites; mite droppings and carcasses of mites need to be vacuumed out of the mattress. Mattresses become home to 3 to 5 million dust mites very fast. Hepa fitted vacuum cleaners that are water based is the best, as suction is constant, thus drawing all dirt out and trapping all in water.
